Q: You said that Michigan parents tend not to encourage their children to pursue higher education. When I came to Michigan, I was impressed with the number of universities and colleges. Is this parental attitude a new phenomenon.
A: No, it is a byproduct of the strong industrial base of the state in the past, which meant that a person could get a good job for life, join the middle class, and enjoy a good retirement, all with only a high school education.

Q: What is going to happen with labs that are lost because of the non-renewal of funding?
A: This is just one more reason not to depend on governmental funding.

Q: I am a junior faculty member and would like to be innovative but my more experienced colleagues caution me against it because it is more risky than following a well tread pathway
A: This is difficult. Talk to your department chair and dean and find out whether they will encourage you in your innovative path.
